Ustins Dvinskis is a Latvian artist based in Kanagawa, Japan. Through abstract painting, he explores the intersections of personal experience, historical change, and the transformation of materials. Using layered surfaces and traces of transformation as his visual language, he examines the relationship between individual lives and the broader flow of time.
Ustins is interested in the boundaries between colour fields. He avoids strict borders, preferring colours to overlap, dissolve into one another, or flow together. Rather than relying on clear geometric forms, he seeks transitions and ambiguity.
He is drawn to the contrast between transparent layers and textured surfaces. In his process, he searches for unexpected outcomes, often repainting a work many times while balancing between chaos and a fragile sense of order.
The search for the unbounded boundary becomes a ritual. The mood of colour invites memory. Again and again, he tries to find the moment when the materials begin to live, speak, fly, burn, or take on a life of their own.
